This week, Tesoro Preschool went underwater.
The Under the Sea theme transformed our classrooms into ocean environments full of fish, coral, sea creatures, and the deep blue wonder of the world beneath the surface.
Ocean week is a perennial favorite, and for good reason. The sea is full of creatures that feel almost fantastical to young children: animals that glow, animals that change color, animals that have no bones, animals that are bigger than a school bus. The sense of discovery that comes with learning about ocean life is exactly the kind of joyful curiosity that Tesoro is built to nurture.
Our teaching team filled the week with ocean science, creature identification, watercolor and mixed-media art projects inspired by coral reefs and sea creatures, and dramatic play that had the Tesoritos swimming, diving, and exploring the ocean floor. The week also included a Spanish movie session, giving children the chance to experience a beloved underwater adventure in Spanish.
Spanish vocabulary dove deep this week: océano, pez, tiberón, coral, medusa, pulpo, profundo. Children practiced these words in songs, in science discussions, and in play that had them naming every creature they encountered on their imaginary ocean floor.
Week six was a reminder that the most incredible things are sometimes hidden just beneath the surface. The tesoritos surfaced on Friday with a whole new appreciation for the world’s oceans.
