From the Construction Site to the Ice Cream Parlor: May’s Dramatic Play Rotations at Tesoro

Walk into a Tesoro classroom this month and you might find yourself in a busy construction zone, a bustling post office, a fragrant flower shop, or an ice cream parlor ready for the lunchtime rush.

That’s the magic of our monthly Dramatic Play rotations, and May’s lineup is one of our favorites of the year.

Each month, our classrooms are transformed into real-world spaces that children can explore, inhabit, and bring to life. This month’s four stations are la construcción, la oficina de correos, la floristeria, and la heladeria. Every station is set up to feel as authentic as possible, with real props, real vocabulary, and real opportunities to practice the kind of language and social skills children carry with them long after the school year ends.

Dramatic play is not just fun, though it is absolutely that. It is one of the most research-supported approaches to early childhood learning. When children step into a role, whether they’re a florist arranging flores or a construction worker measuring madera, they are building vocabulary in context, practicing turn-taking, developing narrative skills, and exercising imagination in ways that formal instruction simply cannot replicate.

At Tesoro, our dual language immersion model makes these stations even richer. Children move naturally between English and Spanish as they play, absorbing vocabulary the way language is meant to be learned: through use, context, and genuine engagement.

Throughout the month, our teaching team rotates children through each station so every little one gets the full experience. Our teachers step into the play alongside the children, guiding without directing, asking questions that stretch thinking, and celebrating every new word and idea.

This is the Tesoro Way in action: joyful, intentional, and deeply connected to how children actually grow.
