Growing Together: How the Tesoro Garden Brings Families Into the Learning

One of the most meaningful things we do at Tesoro is find ways to bring the family into the learning. Not just at events or performances, but in the small, everyday moments that help children feel connected to both home and school at the same time.

Open the Garden week, starting April 6, is exactly that kind of moment.

How it works

Families decorate a small flower pot at home with their child this week and bring it to school. At Tesoro, the children plant flowers in the pot and add it to our school garden, where it will grow alongside all the others throughout the spring.

Drop-off for pots is welcome throughout the week. Parents can see the progress of their child’s plant during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up, watching it change day by day.

Why we love this activity

When a child decorates a pot at home and brings it to school, they are carrying something personal into their school community. They are making a contribution. They are saying: I made this, and now it belongs here.

The planting experience at school builds on that. Children learn to care for a living thing, observe change over time, and connect what happens in the garden to the seasons, the weather, and the world around them. Gardening is a natural fit for Tesoro’s whole-child curriculum, and this week puts children and families at the center of it.

A garden that belongs to everyone

When you walk past the Tesoro garden after this week, you will see a row of flower pots, each one different, each one a child’s own work. It is a small, beautiful picture of our community: individual, creative, and growing together.

We hope your family enjoys the decorating process at home. We cannot wait to see what comes through the door.
