This week, the classrooms at Tesoro Preschool became something altogether wilder.
The Safari theme took the tesoritos on an adventure through grasslands, watering holes, and animal kingdoms, all without leaving campus.
Safari week is built for wonder. Children at this age are deeply drawn to animals: their names, their sounds, their behaviors, and the habitats they call home. Our teaching team channeled that natural fascination into a full week of exploration, using the savanna as the backdrop for science, language, art, and dramatic play.
Children learned the Spanish names of African animals, explored what different creatures eat and how they move, created safari-inspired artwork, and spent time in dramatic play as both animals and explorers. The week also included a Spanish movie session, giving the tesoritos a chance to experience the sights and sounds of a beloved animated adventure in a whole new language.
Spanish vocabulary came alive through the theme: jirafa, león, elefante, sabana, manada. When a child hears a word in a story, draws it in an art project, and then uses it in pretend play, the word sticks. That is the power of theme-based immersion learning.
Week two of summer camp reminded us all that the world is enormous and full of incredible things worth learning about. The tesoritos took that in with open eyes and open ears.
