Every child who joins our Tesoro family goes home with a teddy bear. It arrives in a little Tesoro shirt, and families carry it home from their visit before the very first day of school.
That small gift does something lovely. In the days before school starts, parents tell their child all about the new place they are going. The teddy bear sits right there and listens. It becomes the friend who is going too.
Then the first day comes. Children walk in holding that same bear, and at nap time it curls up beside them. A brand new room feels a little more like home with a familiar friend along.
On September 9, we celebrate that tradition with National Teddy Bear Day. Every classroom hosts a teddy bear picnic, and we invite our children to bring their Tesoro bear or any favorite stuffed friend from home.
During the picnic, teachers read Que Es un Tesoro. Our own Andrea and her husband wrote it, and the whole story comes from the teddy bear’s point of view. It is written in English and in Spanish, and it explains what makes a Tesoro a Tesoro.
It is a cozy, simple morning, and it holds something we believe deeply. A small friend can turn a brand new place into a safe one.
